place setting, Zen style

You can create an interesting table with a bit of thought, some creativity and not too much time.  Here I set a table for a friend’s birthday lunch and used elements that I thought worked well with the meal, which was southeast Asian.

There is no need to be overwhelmed, maybe take just one idea from the setting or create your own little ideas that bring you joy.

Directions

1
Done

For any more Asian-themed meal, I use a more neutral palette for the napkins or placemats - the idea is to create a more subtle feeling. I bring in some color with interesting flowers.

2
Done

You can take a sushi mat, or the bamboo sushi rolling mat, to use on top of the place mat. (see gadget below for sources)

3
Done

Then place chop sticks above plate or on napkin, folding napkin in a geometric way - or if you know Origami even better, try folding napkin in some cool shape.

4
Done

For place cards, I write calming words (peace, gratitude, patience, etc) on two colorful pieces of paper, or you can use plain white paper with different color markers. Place one of the words on the place setting, and the other in a small bowl.

5
Done

Before sitting at the table, each guest selects a word from the bowl, and finds their seat at the table. Easy for you and easy for guest!
